Core Gameplay Mechanics
Super Mario 64 is a 3D platformer where players control Mario through various courses. Mario has a wide range of abilities, including:
- Walking, running, jumping, crouching, crawling, climbing, swimming, kicking, grabbing objects, and punching.
- Special jumps: double jump, triple jump, long jump, backflip, and wall jump.
The game features an innovative virtual camera system operated by Lakitu, allowing players to adjust the camera angle and toggle between first-person and third-person views.
Health, Lives, and Power-Ups
Super Mario 64 introduces a health point system represented by an 8-segment pie. Health can be replenished by:
- Collecting coins: yellow (1 segment), red (2 segments), blue (5 segments).
- Walking through spinning hearts or jumping into water.
Power-ups include:
- Wing Cap: Allows Mario to fly.
- Metal Cap: Makes Mario immune to enemies and environmental hazards.
- Vanish Cap: Renders Mario partially immaterial and invulnerable.
Setting and Objectives
The game is set in Princess Peach's Castle, which serves as the hub world. Players must:
- Jump into paintings to access courses.
- Collect Power Stars to unlock new areas.
- Complete challenges like defeating bosses, solving puzzles, and collecting coins.
There are 120 Power Stars in total, with 15 hidden as secrets.
Yoshi's Reward
Collect all 120 Power Stars to find Yoshi on the castle roof. He rewards you with 100 extra lives, an improved triple jump, and a message from the developers.
